Welcome Address from the Conference Organizers 

 

We are looking forward to welcoming you to Cape Town, South Africa, for the 2018 International Conference on Quality Health Care & Infection Prevention & Control, to be held from 22 - 24 October 2018, CAPE TOWN.

This global event will offer a unique forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience on how to improve quality of healthcare services, prevent healthcare-associated infections and control antimicrobial resistance around the world. Critical issues related to outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging infections, posing a worldwide public health threat, will also be addressed.

This international event is organized by the Southern African Training Academy (SATA). The conference will bring together leaders from Academia and Industry, and will provide a unique setting for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking at a global level. The conference will provide a wonderful forum for you to refresh your knowledge base and explore the innovations in areas of quality healthcare, patient safety, waiting time, adverse events, antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention and control. The Conference will strive to offer plenty of networking opportunities, providing you with the opportunity to meet and interact with the leaders in industries, scientists, researchers, friends and colleagues as well as sponsors and exhibitors.

 

Cape Town is an exceptional location for the Congress. It is renowned as one of the world’s most outstanding cities in the world, with the sparkling Ocean and towering Coast Mountains providing a unique and spectacular setting. Cape Town Lodge Hotel is just located in the Cape Town CBD, with a welcoming atmosphere and wonderful space for both scientific presentations and commercial exhibition. It will be a unique opportunity for high quality scientific program with session lectures, symposia, workshops, poster presentations and different programs for participants from throughout the world. 

A workshop on "Outbreak Investigation" with practical demonstrations by experts and highly qualified scholars in the field will be organised for all IPC & QA Practitioners, students and delegates. This workshop will take place on the last day of the conference.  To facilitate attendance by nurses, young scientists and students of QA/IPC, the conference fee has been greatly reduced mainly if you register early, so please visit the website and look out for the early deadlines for the submission of abstracts.

Keynote Speakers for the 2018 Quality & IPC Conference

Prof. Adriano Duse

Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, NHLS/University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa

Professor Adriano Duse is the Head of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the National Health Laboratory Services & the University of Wits in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dr. Giulio Pieve

Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, University of Pisa, Italy

Giulio Pieve is a medical doctor strongly dedicated to Infection Prevention and Control especially in hospital setting. He graduated at the University of Pisa, Italy in 2012 and is going to specialize in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine at the same university in August 2018 with a thesis on the efficacy and acceptability of an intervention of Infection Control in ICU. Starting from clinical risk management, he focused on the Infection Control theme. He contributed to upgrade the microbiological surveillance system at Pisa University Hospital with the aim of tackling the epidemic level of multi-drug resistant microrganisms into the hospital. During the training period, he spent a lot of time observing and talking with health care workers in order to identify the root causes and achievable solutions to microrganisms transmission in the hospital setting. He believes that zero avoidable patient harm in health care is a real aim reachable through sharing knowledge and enhancing motivation from the top management to the frontline level.

Dr. Khine Swe Swe

Medical Microbiology Department, IALCH Academic complex, NHLS/ University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Dr Khine Swe Swe/Han has awarded PhD in 2017 (Thesis titles: A novel standardized approach to the treatment and management of significant Acinetobacter species infection in KwaZulu-Natal). She is currently working as a Principal Pathologist/Joint academic staff at NHLS/UKZN. She obtained the postgraduate degrees; FC Path, MMed (Medical Microbiology), Diploma of Tropical medicine and Public Health (DTMH); Postgraduate degree of Infection Prevention Control (PDIC) from South Africa University School of Medicine and MB, BS in Myanmar. She is a chairperson of Infection control and Antibiotics stewardship program (ASWP) committees. She is involving in undergraduate, postgraduate program, internal and external examiners. She has published 19 papers, 40 conference presentations. She is a reviewer and supervisor of the postgraduate students. Her interesting professional fields are antimicrobial resistance multidrug resistant organisms, their relevant controls and ASWPs. She found out the Glycopeptide intermediate resistant Staphylococcus aureus (GISA/ hGISA) and the carbapenem resistant Enterobacteraecae (CRE) at local hospital. She participates as an editorial board member of SASCM; FIDSSA, National antimicrobial committee (NAC), Working group committee of C.Difficile; Editorial Board member of CMSA, IPCAN and Senate UKZN. She has involved as a Collaborator / supervisor for The “One Health” Approach to Containing Antibiotic Resistance Research Project.

Prof. Sandeep D. Vasaikar

Medical Microbiology Department, NHLS /Walter Sisulu University, South Africa

Sandeep Vasaikar was born in Vasai, India on 11th May 1965. He is married with two children. Prof Vasaikar holds MBBS (1992) and MD (1996) in Medical Microbiology from University of Mumbai. His MD thesis was on “Bacteriological Studies of Acute Gastroenteritis with Special Reference to Aeromonas Species”. After his specialization in Medical Microbiology, he has worked as a lecturer in Sion Hospital in Mumbai and Gaborone, Botswana. He is currently working as an associate professor of Medical Microbiology and pathologist in NHLS Mthatha. He registered for PhD in Health Sciences, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the division of Medical Microbiology, FHS, WSU, South Africa. He joined Faculty of Health Sciences in the University of Transkei in October 2000. He has supervised BSc Honours, MSc Medical Microbiology, PhD students and has taught MBChB3. For his PhD research he has developed a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) laboratory, now used in research by postgraduate students. Prof Vasaikar has published Fifteen (15) papers in peer review journal articles and has 19 national and international conference abstracts since 2001 to date.  He is registered as a specialist of Medical Microbiology with HPCSA and a member of National Medical Microbiology Expert Committee and other committees.

Dr. Abraham J. Niehaus

Medical Microbiology Department, NHLS at King Dinuzulu Hospital & University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Abraham Niehaus is a medical doctor with specialist training in clinical microbiology. After completing a MBChB degree at the University of the Free State (South Africa) in 2003, he worked for three years as a medical doctor in Bethlehem (South Africa). He then moved to Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, where he was trained as a clinical microbiologist at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and King Edward VIII Hospital. He completed his Master of Medicine (Medical Microbiology) degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was jointly appointed as a full-time pathologist (microbiology) and lecturer by the National Health Laboratory Services and UKZN. He is currently part of a team of pathologists responsible for the medical microbiology laboratory services as well as the teaching and training of medical doctors and clinical microbiologists in KwaZulu-Natal province. Since 2011 he has been responsible for the medical microbiology services at King Dinuzulu Hospital in Durban. His functions include clinical consultations (diagnosis and treatment of infections), hospital infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, laboratory management and laboratory quality assurance. He also is currently enrolled in a PhD program at UKZN in the field of anti-mycobacterial drug discovery. His research has attracted Thuthuka funding through the NRF.

Dr. Teke Apalata

Medical Microbiology Department, NHLS (Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital) & Walter Sisulu University, South Africa

Dr Apalata obtained his Ph.D. degree (2014) and Masters degree of Medicine (M.Med.) (2009) with specialization in Clinical Microbiology from the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, KwaZulu-Natal University in South Africa. He has 15 years combined experience in teaching, research and professional services (5 years of Registrar training and 10 years as Consultant). Prior to that, Dr Apalata practiced as a Medical Officer for 3 years in Internal Medicine and also 1 year as a Medical Intern. His medical qualification (MD) was obtained from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kinshasa in DR Congo. 
Dr Apalata is a former Fogarty International Research Fellow in Global Health with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, USA. He also worked as an International Consultant and a Technical Advisor in Global Health Security Agenda, TB/HIV infection control and biosafety, STIs/HIV, Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) for HIV, strengthening MDR/XDR-TB laboratories and antimicrobial stewardship projects for Ministries of Health in South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Mali, DR Congo and Côte d’Ivoire.
